Issues in Family and Estate Law – The Lunch & Learn Series (2024)
The objective of this program is to educate family law lawyers about estate law issues, and in turn, educate estate lawyers about family law issues. The two streams of practice often intersect. For example, estate lawyers advising a client on a dependant support application, and whether to elect to take under their spouse’s Will or seek equalization of their net family property, ought to have an understanding of the Family Law Act, while family law lawyers preparing marriage contracts should be aware of the circumstances in which a court may override a marriage contract and award financial support to the spouse of the deceased. We hope to educate estate lawyers and family law lawyers alike about these interrelated issues so that they can better advise their clients in the future.
